Washing Hoodies

The first step in hoodie care and maintenance is all about how you are washing it! The best way to approach washing any garment you want to maintain is to check the label and use that as a guideline for what to do.

A good rule of thumb to follow for any soft cotton article of clothing is to machine or hand wash using cold water. Cold water is great for keeping colors from fading! If there is any print on the front of the hoodie, it’s best to wash it inside out. Be sure to zip up any zippers and tie drawstrings together so they don’t get caught on anything.

Avoid using harsh fabric softeners or bleach. You’ll notice the wristbands of hoodies tend to build up discoloration from frequent wear. You can treat the cuffs with detergent or stain remover before washing to restore them.

When you are ready to dry your daughter’s hoodie, there are a couple of options. While airy-drying is great for maintaining clothes, sometimes it’s not practical for a family on the go. Instead, opt for a gentle dry cycle of low heat so the fibers of the cotton don’t break down as quickly. If you are able to air-dry her hoodies, choose a well-ventilated area and lay them flat; hangers can warp and stretch the shoulders.

Why Wash Less?

Unless they have stains, hoodies don't need to be washed after each use the way t-shirts and undergarments do. Because hoodies are most often layered with shirts underneath, they don’t retain body odors as easily.

The less you wash garments, the longer they last and hold their shape. Even though cotton is highly durable, frequent wash and dry cycles of any fabric can make clothes wear down quicker. To help prevent shrinkage and holes, wash less!

Proper Storage for Hoodies

Hoodies do best when they are folded neatly and tucked away in a drawer. It’s convenient to hang them up on a hook by their hood, but hooks and hangers can stretch hoods and shoulders and warp their shapes. Thick cotton materials are weightier and will pull down on hooks and hangers, even when dry. Once the fabric is distorted, it’s hard to get it back to its original shape.

Hoodies and loungewear remain a popular style of clothing for young girls because they have the perfect mix of style and coziness. Use these easy care tips to keep your daughter’s hoodies looking brand-new so she can feel confident and comfortable!
